A string of length 40 metres is divided into three parts of different lengths. The first part is three times the
second part, and the last part is 23 metres smaller than the first part. Find the length of the largest part.

let first part be a

second part be b

third part be c

a = 3b

c = a-23

c = 3b -23

a + b + c = 40

3b + b + 3b -23 = 40

7b = 63

b = 9

a = 27

c = 4

largest part = a = 27
