The grass dried up due to exosmosis.

•Osmosis is movement of solvent molecules from region of higher concentration to lower concentration in presence of semi permeable membrane.

•Endosmosis refers to movement of solvent molecules into the cell.

•Exosmosis refers to movement of solvent molecules outside the cell.

•NaCl causes higher concentration in cells.

•This happens because NaCl enters into cell.

•This increases solute concentration.

•Which in turn causes movement of solvent molecules outside the cell to balance the concentrations.

•Thus cells dry up.

Observation in relation to osmosis:

  • If saline water is given to a plant, this contacts with leaves and stems which  will not harm the plant much but if saltwater sucks or soaks leaves and remains on leaves for an long time, leaves may absorb the NAOH through their pores.
  • Most of water will be absorbed off leaves, leaving behind most ,slight salt residue which inhibits photosynthesis.
  • This danger increases when the saline water falls on ground & the plant absorbs it through the soil.
  • Osmosis, is movement of the water through a membrane. Salt starts osmosis by attracting water towards it and causes it to move across the membrane. Salt is solute.
  • When we add some water to the solute it gets diffused, spreads out the concentration of the salt and creates a solution.
  • If the concentration of salt inside a cell is the same as the concentration of salt outside cell, water amount will remain the same, which creates an isotonic solution.
  • Cell will not gain or lose moisture if it is placed in isotonic solution. Water in cells move towards the highest concentration of the salt.
  • If salt is more in a cell than outside, water will move through the membrane to the cell, which causes increase in its size thus swelling it up as the water fills in the cell.
  • If higher concentration of salt is outside of cell membrane ,water will leave cell to mix with it. Loss of water causes plant cells shrink and wilt. This salt can kill plants.
