A student burns a small sample of a fuel and collects some of the gas produced in a test tube containing a piece of damp litmus paper. The litmus paper turns red, indicating that an acid is present.

Suggest an impurity that might be present in the fuel?

Answer:

Coal and oil contain sulfur impurities. When these fuels burn, the sulfur burns too which releases sulfur dioxide (SO 2) gas. Sulfur dioxide causes breathing problems for living creatures and contributes to acid rain.
