speed of sound, v = 346 m/s
t = 5sec
If the distance between the hands of the student and the cliff is d metres. Then, sound waves travel a total distance of 2d metres to reach him back as an echo.

Hence, by using the elementary formula of speed, we can calculate the net distance travelled by sound waves.

speed = distance/ time
distance = speed × time
2d= 346× 5
d= 173×5= 865 metres

Hence, the distance of the cliff from the student is 865 metres.
Hope, it helps.
