A student dropped few pieces of marble in dil HCl contained in a test tube. The evolved gas was then passed through lime water, what change would be observed in lime water? What will happen if excess of gas is passed through lime water? Write balanced chemical equation for all the changes observed.

Answer:

Marble is Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) Calcium carbonate when added to HCl gives Calcium Chloride, Water and Carbon Dioxide. CaCO3 + HCl --> CaCl2 + H2O + CO2 When this gas (which is CO2) is passed through lime water, Lime water turns milky due to the formation of CaCO3 and H20.
