A student dropped few pieces of marble in dilute hydrochloric acid, contained in a test tube. The evolved gas was then passed through lime water. What change would be observed in lime water. What will happen if excess of gas is passed through lime water. Write balanced chemical equations for all the changes observed.

CaCO3 + 2HCl → CaCl2 + H2O + CO2

Marble is calcium carbonate and on reacting with HCl releases CO2

Ca(OH)2 + CO2 → CaCO3 + H2O

(Lime water)          (White ppt)

Lime water turns milky due to the formation of white ppt of CaCO3 on passing excess CO2, milkiness disappears because Ca(HCO3)2 is formed which is soluble in water.
CaCO3 + H2O + CO2 → Ca(HCO3)2

If you pass excess CO2 through lime-water, the CaCO3 reacts with the excess CO2 and water to form calcium hydrogen carbonate or calcium bicarbonate.

Answer:

⭐Marble is chemically calcium carbonate. When dilute HCl is added to calcium carbonate, it forms calcium chloride, water and carbon dioxide. The chemical equation for the reaction is as follows

   CaCO3 + 2HCl → CaCl2 + H2O + CO2

⭐Carbon dioxide gas turns lime water milky due to the formation of calcium carbonate. Following is the chemical equation showing the reaction between lime water and carbon dioxide.

⭐ Ca(OH)2 + CO2 → CaCO3 + H2O
