carbon dioxide (CO2) gas is formed.

when CO2 is passed over lime water it becomes milky.( This is due to the formation of insoluble calcium carbonate).

when excess of the gas is passed through the solution, the milkiness of the solution disappears This is due to the formation of soluble bicarbonate.
