A student fused an organic compound with sodium and dissolved the product of fusion in water
and filtered the mixture. To a portion of the filtrate the student added silver nitrate solution and a
precipitate was formed. The student concluded that the organic compound contains bromine. Is the
student’s conclusion valid? Explain your position.

Carbonate ions also produce a white precipitate with silver nitrate solution. The acid reacts with any carbonate ions present. This removes them, so stopping them giving an incorrect positive result for chloride ions.
