SOLUTION

GIVEN

  • A student has gotten the following grades on his tests: 87,95,76 and 88

  • He wants an 85 or better overall.

TO DETERMINE

The minimum grade he must get on the last test in order to achieve that average

EVALUATION

Here it is given that the student has gotten the following grades on his tests 87 , 95 , 76 and 88

The student wants an 85 or better overall.

Number of tests = 5

Total number of grades obtained in 4 tests

= 87 + 95 + 76 + 88

= 346

Let the number of grades obtained in 5th test = m

So by the given condition

 \displaystyle \sf{ \frac{346 + x}{5} \geqslant 85 }

 \displaystyle \sf{  \implies \: 346 + x \geqslant (5 \times 85) }

 \displaystyle \sf{  \implies \: 346 + x \geqslant 425}

 \displaystyle \sf{  \implies \: x \geqslant 425 - 346}

 \displaystyle \sf{  \implies \: x \geqslant 79}

Hence the minimum grade he must get on the last test in order to achieve that average

= 79
