He scored = 80 marks.

Failed by = 60 marks .

Then , Average marks for passing = 80+60 = 140 marks .

Let the maximum marks = x

Given : 35% of x marks = 140

35× [1/100]×x = 140

35x = 140×100

35x = 14000

x = 1400/35

x= 400.

Step-by-step explanation:

Marks The student got= 80

% of marks he needs to pass= 35%

He failed by= 60 marks

Marks he needed to pass= 80+60=140

Let the maximum marks be x

35x/100 = 140

=> x= 140×100/35

=> x= 4 ×100

=> x= 400

Ans: The maximum marks is 400
