An onion is made up of layers that are separated by a thin membrane. For this experiment, the thin membrane will be used to observe the onion cells.

Take a piece of onion and bend it to remove the transparent membranous structure called onion epidermal peel. With help of forcep remove the peel from its inner side.

Iodine– to stain the cells so it can be seen under the microscope. Not all cells can be stained with iodine, but onion cells take it up nicely so that there is contrast under the microscope.
