A student is calculating the empirical formula of a substance. He is given the percent composition, and changes everything to grams, then divides by the molar mass of each element to find the number of moles. His numbers do not end up as whole numbers. Has he done something wrong? If so, explain what. If not, describe what he should do next to find the empirical formula.

Answer:

take the percentages divide them by the atomic relative mass of the atoms. After dividing you will get the values. Divide all the values with the smallest value which you get and by doing this you will get a ratio and this will be the empirical formula
