Answer:

In the process of nitrogen fixation nitrogen gas of the atmosphere combines with oxygen and vapour during thunder and lightening to form nitric acid and reaches the soil. However most nitrogen fixation depends on certain bacteria like algae and Azotobacter. So, in the empty box nitrogen should be written to complete the process.

Atmospheric Nitrogen (N2) will be added to the empty box to complete the image.

  • Though nitrogen is present in the highest amount in the atmosphere still it cannot be used as such. The gas present in the atmosphere is inert because the atoms in the molecule form strong triple bonds. Hence, nitrogen isn't able to form compounds to complete the cycle except through lightning and UV radiation that too not in a significant amount.
  • The reduction of nitrogen to ammonia by living organisms is called nitrogen fixation. Only a few prokaryotic organisms can fix atmospheric nitrogen. Some examples are Azotobacter, Rhizobium.
