Explanation:
Stomata hold two main purposes.
- First is gaseous transfer i.e. absorption of carbon dioxide and discharge of oxygen.
- The second is the method of transpiration in plants.
- Air penetrates the plant within these openings. The carbon dioxide is utilised in photosynthesis. Any of the oxygen provided is utilised in a breath. Surplus oxygen outlets within these same openings. Also, water vapour moves into the atmosphere within these openings in transpiration.
- The opening is made by a pair of cells known as guard cells. These alter the size of the hole by opening or closing. To open a guard cell, protons are tapped into the guard cells. Liquid enters them, the cells get full, and they open.
