A student multiplied 7236 by 65 instead of multiplying by 56. By how much was his answer greater than the correct answer?

To find:

The difference between the correct answer and the incorrect answer.

Solution:

Initially the student multiplied by 65 instead of 56

Then the value becomes  

=7236×65=470340

But the number is to be multiplied by 56 (correct one)

Then the value is

=7236×56=405216  

Then the difference between the correct and the incorrect value is given by,

= 470340 – 405216 = 65124  

∴  The first answer was greater than the second one by the value 65124.
