A student performed following two activities in school laboratory:

Activity 1: Addition of Zinc dust into copper sulphate solution taken

in a test tube.

Activity 2: Addition of an iron nail into copper sulphate solution taken

in a test tube.

He noted down his observations and concluded that chemical reaction

occurs in both the cases based on the observed colour change of the

resulting solution.

(a) What was the initial colour of the solution ?

(b) What is the final colour of the solution in Activity 1?

(c) What is the final colour of the solution in Activity 2?

(d) What are the products formed in Activity 2?

(e) Based on these activities, what can you conclude about the

reactivity of elements zinc and iron as compared to that of copper?

Answer:

His observations :

when some zinc granules are placed in copper sulphate solution the solution change its colour., since zinc is more reactive than copper, zinc reacts with copper sulphate (blue) and forms zinc sulphate and copper forms the precipitate
