A student said, “We can’t find the area of the shaded region because the shape has many different measurements, instead of just a length and a width that we could multiply.” Explain why the student’s statement about area is incorrect.

The student's statement about the area is incorrect because we can find the area of the shaded region from the given measurements.

  • In attached file we can see there are two figures:
  • one given in the question and other is the modified for finding the answer.
  • From second figure we say,

       The area of shaded region= Area if rectangle ABCD-(Area of       rectangle P+Area of rectangle Q+Area of rectangle R)             ...(I)

  • we know that area of rectangle is given by legnth x breadth
  • From (I), The area of shaded region

                                 = 30x60 - [(10x10)+(10x15)+(10x15)]

                                 =1800 - (100+150+150)

                                 =1800 - 400

                                 =1400 unit square.

So Area of reactagle is 1400 unit square.

Hence,the student’s statement about area is incorrect.
