The total marks of examination are 550.

Given:

  • A student scored 120 marks in an examination but still failed by 55 marks.
  • If the pas.s marks is 30% of the total marks .

To find:

  • Find the total marks.

Solution:

Step 1:

Let the total marks of examination is x.

Pas.s % is 30%.

i.e.

The student should score 30% of x.

Step 2:

He scored 120 marks but still failed by 55 marks.

So,

 \frac{30}{100} x = 120 + 55 \\

or

 \frac{3x}{10}  = 175 \\

or

3x = 1750 \\

or

x =  \frac{1750}{3}  \\

or

\bf \red{x = 550} \\

Thus,

Total marks of examination are 550.
