Given:

Percentage of marks scored by student = 25% of maximum marks

To find:

The minimum percentage.

Solution:

Let us assume maximum marks as X.

Marks scored by the student = 25% of X

Since the student failed by 44 marks,

Therefore,

The minimum marks are = 25% of X + 44

= (25/100) X + 44

= (X/4) + 44                                            ( equation 1)

This shows,

If the student had scored (X/4) + 44 marks,  he would have cleared the exam.

Another student scored half of the maximum marks,

Therefore, we can write,

Marks obtained by other student = (1/2) of X = (1/2)X = (X/2)

Since another student obtained 56 marks more than the minimum marks,

Therefore,

The minimum marks = (X/2) – 56                 (Equation 2)

Equating equations 1 and 2,

(X/4) + 44 = ( X/2) – 56

(X/2) – ( X/4) = 44+ 56

X = 400

The maximum marks are 400 marks.

From equation 1,

The minimum marks  = (400/4) + 44 = 144

144 marks out of 400 are required to clear the exam.

minimum percentage = (minimum marks / maximum marks) × 100

( 144/ 400 ) × 100

= 36

The minimum percentage is 36 marks.
