Since the sunlight appeared as a bright spot, the rays were converged to give a single spot. Thus the lens used is converging i.e. convex lens.

The bright spot on the paper represents the Focus of the lens. This is because parellel light rays from the sun converge at one point on the focus. This is due to refraction and convergence of sunrays through the convex lens.

To find the focal length, measure the distance between the paper and the lens.
