From the samples what student has collected to test the pH value , washing soda is wrong selection. Because pH paper acts as indicators when substances are aqueous solution.

Answer: (c) Washing soda.

Explanation:

a. Dilute hydrochloric acid: It is a liquid. The pH of this solution is 6.98 where it is an acidic solution.

b. Lemon juice: It is a liquid. The pH of this solution is 2.0 where it a highly acidic solution.

c. Washing soda: It is a solid. It is white inorganic salt which is alkaline in nature.

d. Soap solution: It is a liquid, the pH of this solution is around 9 which is basic solution.

Illustration:

Since, washing soda is in solid form where pH paper cannot be used to find its strength. The pH paper is only used if they are liquid.
