Bt technology is depicted in Figure
First, scientists must find a Bt strain that kills the desired insect. The gene that creates the deadly protein is then isolated. The gene that confers resistance to a chemical (typically an antibiotic or herbicide) is removed from the Bt bacteria, and a gene imparting resistance to a chemical (usually an antibiotic or herbicide) is attached, which will be useful in a later phase.
In plant cells, the Bt gene with the resistance gene linked is introduced. Scientists must now figure out which plant cells have successfully gotten the Bt gene and have been transformed. Any plant cell with the Bt gene also has to have the resistance gene connected to it. The plant cells are grown in the presence of antibiotics.or pesticide, and then pick out the plant cells that aren't damaged. Tissue culture is used to grow these genetically modified plant cells into full-fledged plants. Because the transformed plants now have the same gene as Bt bacteria, they produce the same lethal Bt protein.
