I think he should search in a stream of running fresh water as the habitat of spirogyra (algae) is fresh water.

I know spirogyra is found in standing stagnant water
Dirty or not dirty doesn't matter, the water should be stagnant.

Spirogyra are found in stagnant water because it derives its nutrition and also its growth chances is only possible when water is stagnant not running.
It can't survive long in running water.
