A student was doing an experiment with a colourless solution. It had a smell of vinegar. Name the solution and state the effect of blue litmus and red litmus in this solution.

The solution is most probably the vinegar itself.

Because,

- It has a vinegar like smell which is a direct indication because smell is one of the most important identifying factors of any chemical substance.

- Secondly,the solution is colourless and the vinegar is also colourless.

• The effects on litmus :

- The red litmus stays red in this solution.

- The blue litmus also turns into red in this solution.

- This happens because, vinegar is an acidic solution of acetic acid (diluted).

And we know that litmus turns red into any acid solution.
