A student was given three solution marked X, Y, and Z, and asked to arrange them in the increasing order of their pH values. The student put two drops of each solution on three strips of universal indicator paper separately. The colours shown by the three indicator strips are as follows

  • The pH value decreases if the solution is acidic and pH value increases if the solution is basic in nature. Similarly, the colour of the universal indicator will be in red if it is acidic.
  • If the solution is neutral, then the colour of the indicator will be green in colour. If the colour is purple, then it shows that the solution is basic in nature. Yellow is the colour that comes in between red and green. So, solution Y is acidic in nature.
  • Solution Z shows a green colour, so this shows neutrality. The Blue colour comes in between green and purple, which shows that solution X is basic.
