A student wishes to find the volume of a small, irregularly-shaped stone. A ruler anda
measuring cylinder containing some water are available. Which apparatus is needed

Only measuring cylinder is needed.

Since the stone is irregularly shaped so, there is no need of ruler for finding the volume .

The measuring cylinder has some water in it. So, first measure the reading of cylinder having only water in it. (x 1 )

Now put the stone in it, there will be rise in level of water . Measure the reading of water. (x 2 )

Therefore the rise in water level is due to stone . So, the volume of stone is equal to the rise in level of water. i.e. (x 2)−(x 1)
