a submarine emits a sonar pulse which returns from an underwater cliff in 1.02.s . if the speed of sound in salt water is 1531 m/s, how far away is the cliff?

The time in which submarines emit sonar pulses

= 1.02s

speed of sound in water = 1531m/s

distance which sonar pulses cover = time × speed

= 1.02s× 1531m/s

= 1561.62m

the distance from the submarine to cliffs

= distance which sonar pulses cover ÷2

= 1561.62m ÷2

= 780.81m
