The substance X is Ethanol. Its chemical formula is C₂H₅OH and common name is Ethyl Alcohol.

In presence of Alkaline Potassium permanganate or acidified potassium dichromate, alcohol is converted to carboxylic acid through oxidation.

Refer to the attachment for the reaction.

To test the acidic nature of ethanoic acid, we can either react it with a metal (say sodium) or with a metal carbonate or bicarbonate (say sodium bicarbonate).

In the first case, H₂ gas will be evolved. Its presence can be detected by bringing a  lighted matchstick near it. H₂ gas will burn with a pop sound.

In the second case, CO₂ gas will be evolved. Its presence can be checked by passing it through lime water. Lime water will turn milky.
