Given - Final concentration - 8.5% w/w

Amount of water - 450 gram

Find - Amount of sugar to be dissolved in given amount of water to make up given concentration.

Solution - 8.5% w/w concentration states 8.5 gram of sugar is present in 100 gram of water. Thus, amount of water in given solution is - 100 - 8.5

Amount of water - 91.5 gram.

Therefore, 91.5 gram of water contains 8.5 gram of sugar.

Now, for 450 gram of water, amount of sugar required will be - X - (8.5/91.5)*450

X - 0.09*450

X - 41.8 gram.

Hence, amount of sugar X will be -

C. 41.8 gram.
