\textsf{Let x and y be the number of students in group A and B respectively}

\textsf{As per given data,}

SOLUTION

GIVEN

  • A sum $ 360 is divided between 96 students.

  • Each student belongs to exactly of two groups A and B

  • Each student in group A got $ 2.40

  • Each student in group B got $ 4.80

TO DETERMINE

The number of students in group B

EVALUATION

Here it is given that total number of students = 96

Suppose there are N students in Group A

∴ The number of students in Group B = 96 - N

It is stated that each student in group A got $ 2.40

∴ Total amount of money Group A got

= $ ( N × 2.40 )

Again each student group B got $ 4.80

∴ Total amount of money Group B got

= $ [ ( 96 - N ) × 4.80 ]

Again The total amount of money distributed = $ 360

Hence by the given condition

 \sf{(N \times 2.40) + (96 - N) \times 4.80 = 360}

 \sf{ \implies \: (N  + 192 - 2 N) \times 2.40 = 360}

 \displaystyle \sf{ \implies \: (192 - N) =  \frac{360}{2.40} }

 \displaystyle \sf{ \implies \: (192 - N) =  \frac{36000}{240} }

 \displaystyle \sf{ \implies \: (192 - N) = 150 }

 \displaystyle \sf{ \implies \: N =192 - 150 }

 \displaystyle \sf{ \implies \: N = 42 }

∴ The number of students in Group A = 42

∴ The number of students in Group B

 \sf{ = 96 - 42}

 \sf{ = 54}

FINAL ANSWER

The number of students in Group B = 54
