"5x" → the amount received by Anna

"2x" → the amount received by Christy

Barbara received $ 400 less than Anna, so we can form an equation as:

3x = 5x - 400

⇒ 5x - 3x = 400

⇒ 2x = 400

⇒ x = $\frac{400}{2}$

⇒ x = 200

Therefore,

5x = 5 × 200 = 1000

3x = 3 × 200 = 600

2x = 2 × 200 = 400

Thus, the amount received by each girl is as follows:
