Michelangelo by Sampoorna Singh Kalra alias Gulzar was originally written in Hindi and later translated into English. The story tells about the painting of the Sistine Chapel of the Vatican City by the great Italian Renaissance sculptor and painter- Michelangelo

Explanation:

  • Michelangelo frescoes the chapel's ceiling between 1508 and 1512 under the Pope Julius II's patronage. The work is now one of the mainstays of the Renaissance era to this day. Nevertheless, Michelangelo preferred sculpting to painting
  • For Michelangelo colours lose their uniqueness when used with other colors. whereas marble does not change. Unlike other artists of those days, Michelangelo did not conjure up faces in his mind. That is why he was always in search of models like models for baby Jesus,  models for the Maggi, models for Gabriel, and models for each of the disciples.
  • As a boy in his birthplace in Bolgna, he would accompany his intoxicated father to a nearby bar while he was  to have peanuts outside. When weighing the peanuts, some of them always rolled down and a small poor boy standing nearby would pick them up, put one nut in his mouth , and the others in the basket, and then wait for the next customer
  • 'Michelangelo only bought peanuts to see the boy performance. In the painting of the Madonna of Brujis he used the child as his model of nude baby Jesus. He wanted his works to be true to the spirit. He spent hours reciting the Bible and trying to relate to the characters' expressions and picture their faces.
  • He used the image of his own mother who suffered a lot because of deprivation and a husband drunkard, for Mother Mary . One evening he painted her face, glowing like gold in the light of the fire under the dim light of the lantern as she was preparing dinner.
  • The Sistine Chapel took him a very long time  to complete because of his emphasis on immaculate portrayal. The Pope who hired Michelangelo was under fire for choosing the novice to several other prominent painters. At last the chapel was almost done except one painting that needed Judas' face
  • Michelangelo did his utmost, but he could not envision Judas nor find in Rome a model appropriate for his purpose. His Judas was discovered by Michelangelo. For his paintings, he made a deal with the man. The man went to the chapel every day. One day, as he was staring at several works by Michelangelo, his eyes stuck at one particular painting of baby Jesus
  • The man then asked Michelangelo about the painting, for which Michelangelo replied that he had made that painting when he was in Bologna, his birthplace. Then the man asked Michelangelo if he had remembered his name for which Micheangelo said the model's name was "Marsoleni". The man smiled, rolled up his sleeve and showed a name tattooed on his arm - "Marsoleni". He said Michelangelo that he the same baby Jesus that Michelangelo was now painting as Judas.
