A Surprise Visit Home

Looking up burned your eyes, but the rain was gone; a rare occurrence in the south. Giggles erupted from dares to touch the blistering blacktop; a ten second rule that started to burn after two. Wood chips and dirt managed to creep over the six-inch high, blue, plastic walls around the green monkey bars and blue slides, and covered what used to be grass. The infrequent patches of yellow-green grass trampled flat by the young kids that ran after the wind, including myself. Spring and pollen swam in the humid air; sweaty and sneezy kids made a cheery result.Plastered to children’s backs, you could find unappealing uniforms: a dark blue shirt with a giant school emblem on the front, khaki shorts, slightly above the knees for girls and resting on the patella on the boys, paired with a mishmash of shoes that ranged from neon yellow to black; I loved the simplicity and carelessness of them. The music to my ears created by the laughter that filled the air created a joyful tone. Flying from monkey bar to bar proved difficult with moist, wet hands; I must have wiped them on my shirt hem a thousand times, but I either repeated that action or dropped the height of a mountain onto my bare, scarred knees from falling before. The monkey bars proved to be an intimidating and scary obstacle, but pushing through it created the feeling of success and pure joy.

Mulch browned my tennis shoes. The purple and green sneakers on my feet kicked at the flexible pieces of wood that lie on the holed, rubber floor of the playground as the monkey bar line grew shorter.
