We need to calculate the volume of the earth dug out:

Vol = length × width × height

Length = 30

Width = 20

Height = 12

Volume = 12 × 30 × 20 = 7200

= 7200m³

Now the surface area of the field is :

A = 500 × 30 = 15000 m²

The remaining portion of the field equals to :

Total area less the area of the hole.

15000 - (30 × 20) = 14400 m²

The level of the soil is :

7200/14400 = 0.5

= 0.5 m
