The switch must be connected to the live wire. In the event of an electrical fault (live wire touches the metal casing) The metal casing will not become "Live". Whenever fuse is blown out or switch is opened, the appliance is disconnected from the high potential of the live wire.
If switch is on the neutral wire, even though switch is opened, the appliance will still be "Live" as it is connected to the Live wire.
