A symbiotic relationship occurs between the algae and fungi. In this relationship, the fungus receives the nutrients they have obtained from algae. The algae also benefit as it receives protection, stability and food from the fungus. Lichens grow in deserts, on a rock, trees or even on the exposed soil and it is with the help of the fungus that the Lichen gets a safe and well-protected environment to thrive in.

1) How will the lack of sunlight affect the symbiotic relationship?
2) Will the lichen survives if the fungal component dies?
3) Can you think of any other symbiotic relationship in the plant family which may be of great use to the farmers growing pulses?
