A system consisting of two masses connected by a
massless rod lies along the x-axis. A 0.4 kg mass is at
a distance x=2m while a 0.6 kg mass is at a distance
x=7m. The x-coordinate of the centre of mass is
(1) 5m
(2) 3.5mm
(3) 4.5m
(4) 4m

EXPLANATION —

↪Actually welcome to the concept of Centre of Mass

↪We will use simple formula to find centre of mass along x-coordinate.

X_{CM} =  \frac{m_1x_1 + m_2x_2}{m_1 + m_2}

Putting the given values

X_{CM} \:  =  \frac{0.4 \times 2 + 0.6 \times 7}{0.4 + 0.6}  = 5
