A system undergoes a process in which DU =
+ 300 J while absorbing 400 J of heat energy
and undergoing an expansion against 0.5 bar.
What is the change in the volume (in L)?
(1) 4
(2) 5

2 is the change in the volume (in L).

Explanation:

Given that,

ΔU = +300J

Absorbing heat energy(dq) = 400J

p = 0.5

Using the Ist law of thermodynamics, we get;

du + dw = dq

300J + dw = 400J

∵ dw = 100J

We also know,

dw = pdv

so,

dv = dw/p

We are given that,

(dw = 100J, p = 0.5bar = 0.5×11^5  pascal)

so,

dv = (100/0.5) * 100000

In liters,

1m^3 = 1000liters

dv = 2/1000m^3

dv(change of volume(L)) = 2liters

Thus, option 3 is the correct answer.
