The change in volume is 2 liter.

Given-

  • Heat absorbed by the system = 5 kJ
  • External pressure = 1 atm
  • Change in internal energy is = 300 J

From the first law of thermodynamics

ΔU = Q + W in which ΔU is the change in internal energy, Q is the heat and W is the work done.

ΔU = Q - P ext (V₂ - V₁)

By substituting the values we get

300 = 500 - 1 (ΔV) × 100

ΔV = 2 lit

Hence the change in volume is 2 liter.
