Given : A tangent is drawn from a point at a distance of 17cm of circle c ( 0 , r ) of radius 8 cm

To Find : length of it's tangent

Solution:

circle c ( 0 , r )

Hence center of circle = (0 ,0)

Radius = r = 8 cm   ( given )

A tangent is drawn from a point at a distance of 17cm

Hence distance of point from circle = 17 cm

Using Pythagoras theorem

17² = Tangent length² + radius²

=> 17² = Tangent length² + 8²

=> Tangent length² =  17² -  8²

=> Tangent length² =  (17 + 8)(17 - 8)

=> Tangent length² =  25 (9)

=> Tangent length² =  5².3²

=>  Tangent length = 5 * 3

=> Tangent length = 15 cm
