A tank 1.2 m2 and 3.6m high receives water at a rate of 20 dm3/s. The water flows from the tank through a 65mm diameter orifice having Cd = 0.79. Find the height of water above the orifice to maintain the flow.

Answer:

given  =  rate of water =  20dm³/s

              diameter = 65mm =  65 X 10⁻³

               Cd = 0.79

to find = height of water above the orifice to maintain the flow ? (h)

solution =

    area of orifice A =   πr² =  πd²/ 4 =   3.14 X (65 X 10⁻⁶) / 4

                               =  3.316.625 X 10⁻⁶

now, for flow .

rate of water into water tank = rate of water discharged through orifice

20 X 10⁻³ = Cd .A √2gh

20 X 10⁻³= 0.79 X 3316.625 X 10⁻⁶ X \sqrt{2 X 9.8 Xh}

2 X 9.8 X h = 58.21

h =   9.8 X 2 / 58.21

h = 2.97m

so the height of water above the orifice to maintain flow is 2.97 m
