a tank can be filled by pipe A in 12 hrs and by pipe B in 15 hrs. An outlet pipe C can empty the tank in 10 hrs. If the tank is initially empty and all the three pipes are open, how many hrs will it take to fill up the tank

Answer:

20 hr.

Here is how.

Step-by-step explanation:

Time taken by A to fill a tank - 12 hr

Time taken by B to fill a tank - 15 hr

Time taken by C to empty a tank is - 10 hr

Here, We will use -ve sign with C because it is an empty tank.

A - 12

B - 15

C - (-10)

LCM of 12, 15 and 10 is 60 and can be considered as the tank capacity.

As we know Efficiency × Time = Capacity (Total Work)

Efficiency of A,B and C are,

A - 60/12 = 5

B - 60/15 = 4

C - 60/(-10) = -6

Adding their Efficiencies, we get the overall efficiency = 5+4-6 = 3

60 is the total Capacity and 3 is the overall efficiency when all pipes are open.

using above formula,

Efficiency × Time = Capacity

3 × Time = 60

Time = 60/3

Time = 20 hr.
