A tank containing 50 litres of water develops a leak and loses water at a constant rate. After 20 minutes it contains 40 litres. After a further 30 minutes the tank is 5% of its full capacity. Determine the tank’s capacity.

Answer:

Let the full capacity of tank be x litres

Tank contains 50L of water

After 20 mins,

Tank contains 40L of water

After a further 30 mins,

Tank contains 5/100 × x = x/20 L......(i)

So in 20 mins the tank loses (50-40)L

In 1 min= 10/20 = 1/2 L

So in 50 mins the tank loses = 1/2 ×50 = 25L

So the tank's capacity after a total of 50mins(30+20)

= 50L - 25L = 25L

ATQ,

x/20 = 25

x= 25×20 = 500L
