A tank has some filling pipes connected to it and each
pipe fills the tank at the same rate. Some holes are
present at the bottom of the tank and each hole
empties the tank at the same rate. If 10 pipes and
8 holes are opened, it would take 10 hours to fill the
tank. Instead, if 8 pipes and 10 holes are opened, it
would take 35 hours to fill the same tank. Find the
time taken to fill the tank when 3 pipes and 4 holes
are opened

Answer :-

Let each pipe has a efficiency of x litre of water / hour filling and each hole has a efficiency of y litre of water / hour emptying .

so,

→ 10(10x - 8y) = 35(8x - 10y) since capacity of tank is same in both case .

→ 100x - 80y = 280x - 350y

→ 350y - 80y = 280x - 100x

→ 270y = 180x

→ x/y = 3/2 .

then,

→ Total capacity of tank = 10(10x - 8y) = 10(10*3 - 8*2) = 10(30 - 16) = 10 * 14 = 140 litres .

therefore,

→ Time taken to fill the tank when 3 pipes and 4 holes

are opened = Total capacity of tank / (3x - 4y) = 140/(3*3 - 2*2) = 140/(9 - 4) = 140/5 = 28 hours (Ans.)
