When two work together;
Rate = 1/x + 1/(x-2) per hour
= (2x-2)/(x² - 2x)
Time taken to fill the tank = (x² - 2x)/(2x-2) = 1 7/8 =
15/8
(x² - 2x)/(2x-2) = 15/8
8x²-46x+30=0
Solving for x
x = 5 or x = 3/4
We take x = 5
Therefore;
tap p takes 5 hrs
and
tap q takes (5-2) = 3 hours
