A tank is fitted with two taps. The first tap can fill the tank completely in 40 minutes and the second tap can empty the full tank in one hour. If both taps are opened alternately for one minute, then in how many hours the empty tank will be filled completely ?

Let's consider


In two minutes,

In first minute 1st tap will fill water.

1st tap can fill 1/40 units of water.

In second minute 2nd tap will empty water.

2nd tap can empty 1/60 units of water.


That is at the end of two minutes,

Tank will have 1/40-1/60= 1/120 amt of water.


To fill the tank fully it'll take 2 × 120 = 240 minutes = 4 hours.
