Answer:

10 ms⁻¹

Explanation:

Given:

m₁ = 20000 kg

u₁ = 10 ms⁻¹

m₂ = 5000 kg

u₂ = 20 ms⁻¹

To find:

The common velocity after collision.

According to the law of conservation of motion, the initial and final momentum remains same i.e momentum is conserved during a collision.

So,

m₁u₁ + m₂u₂ =  m₁v₁ + m₂+v₂

= (20000)(10) + (5000)(10) = v(m₁ + m₂)   [∵v₁ = v₂ = v]

= 200,000 + 50,000 = v(20000 + 5000)

v = 250000/25000

v = 10 ms⁻¹
