A teacher bought 40 pens at $8.20 each an a number of other pen costing$2.95 each. In all he spent $387. How many of the cheap pens did he buy?

Let n be the number of cheaper PENS. Then

n*2.95 + 40*8.20 = 387

n*2.95 = 387 - 40*8.20

n = (387 - 40*8.20)/2.95

n = 20
