History is astronomy. Since light takes time to journey from one place to another, objects are not seen as they are now, but as they were when the light that went through the universe came to us. Therefore astronomers will look back over time by slowly observing more distant objects.

EXPLANATION:

  • During its last epochs the main difficulty with this "time machine" was that distant objects seemed less visible than near objects. Therefore, when we go back to the past, we have to catch and examine the light from dimmer objects. Our nearest neighbour, the Andromeda Galaxy, is 2 million light years away, requires specialized instruments.
  • But this Milky Way companion shines a million times brighter than the same galaxy seen at 2 billion light years away! This contrast gives an understanding of how difficult it is to get pictures of artefacts created near the Big Bang period of over 10 billion people.
  • Because light takes time to travel from one place to another, we see objects not as they are now but as they were at the time when they released the light that has travelled across the universe to us. Astronomers can therefore look farther back through time by studying progressively more-distant objects.
