A test tube contains solution of NaOH and phenolphthalein. Why the colour of the solution changes when HCL in added to it

when the test tube contains sodium hydroxide and phenolphthalein then its colour would be pink and when HCL is added in it it will convert itself into colourless because noun the solution which was initially basic in nature becomes acidic in nature by adding HCL in it
